Re: Just how good was Bowie
Hunky Dory, Ziggy and Alladin Sane were the three albums that took him into the stratosphere. What happened with Bowie was a lot of folk didn't 'get' him initially, and then when they did, it hit them hard and overran them. I was DJ'ing through most of the 70s, and the two fellas who used to help me were like that - they just couldn't grasp what all the fuss was about. I forced Ziggy on them until the lights came on, it was like watching somebody on speed for the first time. We saw Bowie in July 73, at Hammersmith, on the penultimate night before he 'retired' Ziggy, having seen Slade at 'that' gig at Earls Court the previous night. Wild times. This was just a couple of nights before Don Powell smashed his car up, killing his girlfriend and almost killing himself, too.
Given how long humans have been around, I count myself incredibly lucky to have lived at the same time as all these people.

Noddy Holder is a better singer than Bowie.

He is now!

Saw him in Sydney 2004.
I somehow knew all the words to every song he performed that night. I'm not one to usually having this knowledge only a few artists on my memory bank. Bowie was one and that shows how much of a influence he had on my teenage years.
Enough said.

The greatest, in a league of his own!

Even his final Album Black Star when he know he was dying has a couple of great tracks that are totally unique.

I have most of his albums on vinyl.

I shed a tear when he died which I've never done before or since for a famous person's death.

Cunts on here took the piss of course.

I have all his albums and dipping into play any one, it's always Bowie, but somehow fresh & different from the last one I played.

I also have all the Pink Floyd albums and dipping in to play any one it's always, well, just what it says on the can - found a sound and stayed there.

one of the all time greats, if not the best, and he's fucking lucky otherwise his legacy would have gone the same way as Gary Glitter and Rolf Harris if you know what I mean...

Talking of the Frippster, I assume most will have seen the videos that he made with Toyah over the last year or so?

Brilliantly insane!

Always keep a little Marc in your heart Lato

Still amazed that Bowie gave away All the young dudes to Mott the Hoople and also offered suffragette city

Re: Just how good was Bowie
Was never a fan of his growing up in the 70's like others I was into Slade and T-REX.

When you look at his songs listed on here tho it's made me realise he was pretty damn good.

Marc Bolan tho was a genius.

RIP together in musical heaven.

Re: Just how good was Bowie
Firstly not a fan of the Alladin Sane glam stuff. Let's Dance is commercial pop shite.as is the rest as follows.

For me the genius was from Station to Station to Scary Monsters. StoS and Heroes being seminal albums and hugely influential. Golden Years and Secret Life of Arabia being my personal favourites.

But even saying that for every Bowie album you find 2-3 great tracks and a lot of pretty poor stuff. He was aided by his collaborations with top muscians like Eno, Peter Fripp and Carlos Almodovar.

But lets not forget his production and writing influence on Lou Reed's Transformer , Iggy Pop and Grace Jones.

Yeah overall he was pretty fucking good.
